The Bet

“They are so gay for each other.”

John glanced in the direction Guy was looking, at the group of Lanterns talking after the meeting. “Who?”

Guy smirked. “Hal and Kyle.”

John raised his eyebrows. “What?” That had to be one of the most absurd things Guy had ever said, and that was saying a lot. He looked back at the group. Hal was talking to Kilowog. Kyle was a few feet behind him, talking to Arisia and Soranik. They weren’t even talking to each other. “How the hell do you get that idea?”

“Just watch them, Johnny,” Guy said. “Kyle keeps glancing over at Hal.” He snickered. “And Hal’s been checking out Kyle’s ass.”

“Right, Guy.” John rolled his eyes. “You’re seeing things.”

Guy shook his head. “No, I’m not seeing things.” He pointed towards the group. “Watch them.”

John sighed and turned around. “I think you’re delusional,” he muttered under his breath, but then he saw Kyle glance over his shoulder at Hal, quick enough that John probably wouldn’t have even noticed it if he hadn’t been watching for it. But one glance didn’t mean anything.

Then Kyle did it again, still glancing towards Hal.

“See?” Guy said smugly.

“It’s just a glance,” John said. “People look around when they’re having conversations.”

“But he’s always looking at Hal,” Guy said.

John shrugged. “So? Kyle’s always looked up to Hal, even when we were just telling stories about him. Maybe it’s … a man-crush.”

“A man-crush?” Guy snorted. “There’s a crush going on, and it’s on a man, but it’s way more than a man-crush.” He nodded his head towards the group. “And that doesn’t explain Hal checking out Kyle’s ass at this very moment.”

John turned to look again. Kilowog was now discussing something with Salaak, so Hal had turned away. And he was looking at Kyle.

“I’m right, aren’t I?” Guy asked. “If that were Arisia or Soranik standing in Kyle’s spot, you’d be thinking that Hal was being a total horndog and checking out her ass. Well, he’s still a horndog, it’s just Kyle’s pants he wants to get into.”

John frowned. Okay, so he couldn’t deny that it did sort of look like that. But it was Hal Jordan they were talking about. “I know what it looks like. But it’s Hal, Guy. It’s pretty obvious he likes women.”

“So he’s bi. Or in denial. And the way they’ve been dancing around each other since Hal came back, it’s pretty obvious what’s going on.” Guy grinned and elbowed John. “The kid is crushing so hard, he’ll probably have little green hearts floating around his head for a week after Jordan finally admits he’s gay and fucks him.”

John shook his head. He was a Marine, he knew how strong the bonds were between guys put in life-and-death situations. “They’ve just become close friends, Guy. It’s not surprising. Kyle brought Hal’s body back and saved his life—”

“Nope. It’s more than that, Johnny. I’m willing to bet on it.”

“What makes you so sure about that?” John asked.

“Heh. I spent a lot of time around Booster and Beetle. I know the signs.” Guy held out his hand. “Come on. A hundred bucks says they’re nailing each other within a year.”

John sighed. Yeah, it was completely wrong to be betting on his friends like this. But he just couldn’t resist the moment when he would be able to say ‘I told you so’ to Guy and take his $100 just to rub it in. He grasped Guy’s hand. “Okay. It’s a bet.”
