Four Drabbles About Love

She was beautiful.

Maybe she was ‘over the hill’ and had some wear and tear, but she had class. An elegant beauty that was timeless. You didn’t see that anymore. Nowadays they gave you a good time, but they were all sleek and cold, no longer a charming lady you could fall in love with.

Hal reached out to touch her skin, caressing her lovingly, wishing he could take her for a ride …

Kyle ducked under the nose of the B-17 to stand next to Hal, an amused grin on his face. “I think I’m jealous of an airplane.”

Hal owed his life to the four men sitting at the table with him. Alan, who was a mentor to him. John, who had never judged him. Even Guy had backed him up though there had been bad blood between them. They had all stood with him, facing down Parallax and the JLA with him. And then the kid … he had no reason to trust Hal, but Kyle was the main reason Hal was alive. And Hal could never thank them enough for their friendship and loyalty, so he just raised his glass of beer. “Thanks for believing in me.”

Hal couldn’t remember the last time he was able to sleep in on a weekend and there were times when he really missed those days. Until the bedroom door swung open and two giggling little bundles of energy flung themselves onto the bed, all knees and elbows that Hal had to watch out for while they jostled for space between him and Kyle under the blanket. And when they turned up big brown eyes at him and chirped “Good morning, Dad!” and wanted a kiss and a cuddle, it reminded Hal that sleeping in on a Sunday morning was overrated.

“What?” Hal asked. Dinah was watching him with a grin.

“I’ve never seen you like this before. You’re positively giddy,” she said, laughing. “You can’t stop smiling and you have a very satisfied look on your face.” She put her arm around him and squeezed. “You, Hal, are in love.”

He snorted. After only a month? “It’s far too early for that.”

The back door opened and Kyle came in with Mia, arms full of groceries. Kyle smiled at him and Hal smiled back, his heart skipping and stomach fluttering. Dinah poked him in the side. “Nope. Not this time.”
